Freight preparation

There are a few simple rules to follow when preparing a pallet for collection by your local UPN depot. All freight must be presented to the driver in the right condition. Damage to freight is very rare, but when it occurs, it is normally due to inadequate packaging. If goods have to be re-packed, further costs and extra delays may occur.

1. Use good quality pallets

All freight must be securely attached to a good quality four way pallet, accessible from all sides. The pallet should be suitable for the type of goods carried and must have no missing boards or chocks.

2. Secure goods to the pallet base

Goods must be banded, heat shrunk or shrink wrapped to the pallet, ensuring that no items are overhanging. All freight should be wrapped to protect it whilst in transit. 

3. Stabilise goods for transit

If goods are not properly secured to the pallet, they could move in transit and the risk of damage is increased. Stability of the goods on the pallet is important. Ensure that heavier cartons or boxes are packed at the bottom and that the weight of the subsequent layers does not crush them. Secure each layer with tape or strapping and use cardboard sheets between each layer to avoid movement during transit.

4. Protect bag traffic

Bag traffic should be protected on all sides and underneath the pallet with cardboard or a similar substance.

5. Wrap and label properly

High value goods should be black shrink-wrapped and sealed with security tape. If the goods are non stackable or fragile, label accordingly and consider the use of a pallet cap.
